Kataang Fanfiction

Prologue

I remember like it was yesterday. I remember the day I realized that I truly loved him.

It was two days after the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai, and the day after Zuko's coronation. We were relaxing in Iroh's tea shop, the Jasmine Dragon, in the Upper Ring of Ba Sing Se. Zuko was serving tea to everyone. Sokka suddenly shouted, "Zuko, stop moving! I'm trying to capture the moment! I wanted to do a painting, so we would always remember the good times together."

I stood and walked over to where my brother sat at a table. "That's very thoughtful of you, Sokka," I said and leaned over his shoulder to take a look at his picture. I was stunned. "Wait, why did you give me Momo's ears?" Let's just say that my brother's artistic skills aren't exactly the best...

"Those are your hair loopies!" Sokka tried to defend himself. Suki, Mai, and Zuko joined us at the table.

"At least you don't look like a boarcupine!" Zuko said. "My hair's not that spiky!"

Mai and Suki threw in their complaints. Momo jumped up onto the table and made a few chattering noises. Sokka crossed his arms and glared at the lemur. "Oh, you think you can do a better job, Momo?"

Iroh and Toph walked over. I wasn't paying attention to what they were saying, though. I was watching Aang as he slipped out the door, unnoticed by everyone except for me. I watched him stop for a moment to rub Appa's nose before heading to the front of the courtyard facing the city.

"Well, I think you all look perfect!" Toph said with a grin. We all shared a laugh at her joke about her blindness. While everyone else continued to comment on Sokka's painting, I followed Aang to the courtyard.
The sun was dipping just below the horizon, casting an orange glow over the city of Ba Sing Se. It was truly beautiful. As I came closer to him, Aang turned to me, and we shared a smile. I felt my cheeks blush a deep pink, and butterflies settled into my stomach. I placed a hand on his shoulder, pulling him into a hug. I can't really explain it, but it just felt… right. I could feel his heart beating against my chest, in perfect sync with mine.

When we let go of each other, I felt the urge to hug him again and never let go, but I fought the urge. We turned to look at the sunset again, but that only lasted a moment before we faced each other again.

Then… then it happened. We kissed. I felt my heart do a few leaps when his lips pressed against mine. I felt like flying. I wasn't aware of my surroundings anymore. It was just me and Aang. And that was all that really mattered to me at the time.

I didn't want the moment to end. I could have stayed there forever. But we needed to catch our breaths after a long while. He pulled away and smiled at me again. My heart was still doing flips. He grabbed my hands and said, "You have no idea how long I've been waiting for that."

We looked at the beautiful sunset together. Aang pulled me back into an embrace after a minute and kissed my forehead. He whispered into my ear, "I love you, Katara."

Tears sprung into my eyes, but they were tears of joy. I closed my eyes and whispered back. "I love you too."

Beautiful, indeed.
